A late post on the 1st Saipan's Photographer's Meet

"We were quite surprise with the outcome of the event..."
On February 12, 2011, my friend and fellow photographer, Marie Sayson, organized the first ever Saipan's Photographer's Meet. It was a clear Saturday afternoon, and boy oh boy was it the perfect weather to bring out our cameras and shoot.

The night before, we had a mini meet and greet, where we had dinner with a few of the local photographers. It was a good thing that we scheduled this too because a few who came that night couldn't come the day after.

It was a blast to talk with everyone of the same interest in every skill level in photography. We had top guns like Del Benson, Hideo Honda, Eric Javier, Rey Belgado and Antonio Cabrera who were very friendly and gladly shared much of their knowledge about photography.

Hope you enjoyed the read!

Random Many Things: The Abandoned Chapter

"Sometimes, interesting things comes from something forgotten".....
Sadly, December became soo crazy that I had to sacrifice a few projects to incorporate more time for more important work such as the ones I had with some clients. One of those projects is my 365...

I listed all the days I missed and pretty much, I have totally failed hahaha. I don't wanna cheat and just upload all the things I planned on posting up for each day I missed that I would be taking in one day, that wouldn't be a proper 365 anymore lol so instead, I'm transitioning back to my Random Shots which are shots taken on any given day, pretty much like a photo journal. It makes a lot more sense too, my 365 was identical to my Random Many Things album, and it just didn't look easy on the eyes. I'd still be following the same description method though: date taken, title, and what's it about, but I'm not looking forward on updating the galleries haha.... ohhhh welll -.-

Abandoned
Taken: January 29. 2011 3pm

Below are some images I took during the artist photo session with my friend and local phtographer John Kyle Pangelinan of John Kyle Photography and an underground young local talented musician named Richard Matsuyama aka MC Ryoku. The set of the whole session was in the island's biggest outdoor mall which is disappointingly abandoned and destroyed now. This place used to be gorgeous and full of life, but since the island's economy fell, the whole place got shut down.

Now it stands lifeless, only housing what used to be, or more like what is left. The place had been vandalized and burglarized for years and it literally looks like a ghost town. It's pretty much an example of what the world would look like when all things fail.

Though the place maybe an eye sore to some, to others like myself, the place is a world of anything that could be taken creatively. Sometimes the worst places could provide the most interesting pieces of art and below are my examples of the very idea.

I hope u guys enjoyed some of my most recent shots =]
Stay awesome!

LAAAAATE POST: Still Life 2010 (Self Work)

"My work simply needs more spotlight on here HAHA XD ".....
Ok, so the saddest thing bout me is not at all updating about my work on here -.-"Yeh, what's the deal?" you say, well deal is I've been busy, and still is and haven't updated my galleries, except my Facebook Fanpage which I hardly use the images from cause of the quality... Sooo, by the time I get on updating those galleries, you all will be able see the previous stuff I've been working on ^-^

Sorry again...
I'm trying my best to keep up =/

Anyways, as you all know, I am still currently trying to get used to my new camera.
Yup, the Nikon D7000 which I got last year. I haven't mastered it yet, got a loong way to go, but so far so good. I also can't wait for some projects I've been planning on, so hopefully those would help me get better too.

So moving onto the works...
I mentioned this set on my Project 365 post, it was the night I met up with a friend of mine (who also happens to be a well known local photographer down here)to learn some basic tips on getting started. It was a pretty fun night, just learning and stuff. At the same time we were both trying to learn our Speedlights, since we were both new to the SB-600, and I just acted like a lil kid in a candy store every time I learned something new about the equipment. At the end, I headed home to practice some more. Best way was to do some still lifes which I wasn't new at. I always did these shoots during high school for art class.

It felt really good to go back to doing something I used to do back then. Made me feel all happy inside hahaha. Anyways, my set up for this set was easy. I got out my white illustration boards as a backdrop and floor. Usually you'd use a light box for product photography, but as of right now, I ain't got one so I just had to compromise.

Now ever since I landed a job as an admin/graphic designer for The Athlere's Foot of Saipan and Guam and as well as Boarderline, I've turned into a sneaker junkie. I won't call myself a Sneakerhead cause I don't know all the technical stuff they do, but I love them sneaks just as much =D. One of my fave brands just gotta be them J's and when the SC-1s came out here, I had to cop a pair of my own. I wanted these blue ones for my boyfriend too, so we'd have something matching to wear when we finna meet, but we don't got the men sizes here =,[. Hopefully one day I'll get to get him the same pair online.

Below gots to be one of my fave shots so far. The perfume was given to me by my sister back in GA for Xmas long ago. It sadly ran out, but I tend to keep empty perfume bottles cause they just looks soo cool haha. At this point I played with the light alot. The first pic though, I decided to play with a lil. Since my true passion is photo manipulations, I just had to do something on the graphic side with this one. In the end it turned out to be pretty killer ^-^

Then there is the Shiny Lil Thangs shot, where I just piled half of my collection of jewelry. Pretty great shot, but when I can finally afford a micro lens Imma try this out again. ^-^

Thanks for viewing the post yah'll!
Much love and peace,

First Week Of Project 365

I found out all bout the 365 project when I wrote about Julia Wang's photography. It was really interesting, the whole concept around it is that you must take a picture every single day for the whole year and post and write about them aswell. This whole project will help you to become better in your craft and you'll be shock on how much you'll improve by the end of the year. So I thought to myself that since my brand new first DSLR camera was coming in, that I should use this project to get used to it.

For the past months of getting back into photography, I've been using only a compact point-and-shoot camera. Yup, all my work tagged with Myreikko Imagery were all taken with a point-and-shoot ^-^.
Truth is the last time I've ever worked a DSLR was back in high school during the whole semester I took up photography. So you could just imagine my reaction when I finally got my camera and already had 1 photo shoot scheduled 3/4 days after.

001/365 112910 "First day with the new camera (Nikon D7000)."
I read the manual a couple of times after we finally had the order down. I've read full reviews on this very camera before I even made a serious decision. I am honestly not disappointed. There's nothing bout this camera that I don't like except the fact that I get frustrated trying to learn it lol. Though they did advice that this baby wasn't meant for a beginner, aye I rather take my chances haha.

002/365 113010 "Mom and Bokeh."
Above was my first attempt to get a bokeh feel and a clear un-shaky portrait. That's my mama by the way lol. Overall I can safely say I did a good job hehehe just wish it wasn't so orange -.-

003/365 120110 "Spiz'ikes."
Ahhh, this day was da bomb. I met up with a fellow photographer and friend of mine to learn some basics from him. After a good talk and some sharing of quality knowledge, I went home that very night with one objective: Play with the Speedlight I bought with the camera and do an old time studio shoot. I do these shoots alot before, just something I did when I was bored hahaha. I got some sick images that night , even though I was fighting with the camera and the flash ahaha.

004/365 120210 "Java."
This was taken after my first photo shoot with the new camera. We decided to chill at one of the local bars and grab a drink. The drink above though isn't from the bar hahaha, it's one of my favorite flavors from a really popular cafe here called Java Joes. This night was something to remember fo'sho. New experiences, new equipment, new people. It was awesome and I can't wait for yah'll to read about that very shoot.

005/365 120310 "Tripp-Lite."
I thought I was done for the year with all the buying of expensive equipment, but to dad a new camera meant more photo shoots meaning more important files in my computer and knowing that the power here tends to be so messed up, it isn't worth risking the life of my 2k Imac. So I had to swallow my pride and bought a UPS Battery Back-Up System -.-

006/365 120410 "Raindrops and Lollipops."
This was an awesome day! LOL I know, I know. You see them rain drops, bet you're like wat's so awesome with a rainy day on a photo shoot. Well cause the whole day it didn't rain, there was hardly a gray cloud in the sky and I had amazing results with my 2nd and 3rd photo shoots with my new cam. Like the pick above, they came out Happy Dandy!!

007/365 120510 "Tis the Season."
Another day, another photo shoot. I was pretty happy with the results from this day too ^-^. New concepts, new feel and I got some pretty awesome shots! It was the day I started noticing that I was getting just a lil better than compared with the first day I had the cam hehe. Once again, I can't wait for you guys to read bout this shoot ^-^

Well I hope all yahll enjoyed my first week of the 365!
Stay tuned for the Second week and see what I come up with next =]

Love and Peace,
Nix

Collaborative Shoot with Marie Sayson Photography

Seven days ago I took on a collaboration with a local upcoming photographer/make-up artist and friend Marie Sayson of Marie Sayson Photography. We took on a very familiar location here on island which fit perfectly with her action theme. The Old Japanese Jail located here in Saipan is one awesome location, it's old, run down and grudge-ie, just the way we like it =].

Jacky (My Assistant) and Marie Sayson (Marie Sayson Photography)

It was really the perfect place for a Tomb Raider like reenactment, though being around this location at night was a little scary O.O

Secondary shots by me.

As always, my awesome assistant/personal model did a great job. We had some artist block along the way but recovered fairly well lol. I miss editing shots where I can customize them the way I usually do with my images.

Dizz Is Mah House!

This set alone made me realize what I set back and separated from my true abilities and what I've been trying to master. I really ain't looking into being a complete photographer, I rather be a visionary artist ^-^.

Oww Oww lol.

Though I'm still holding back on the graphics, it's only because I don't want one medium overlooking the other. Sadly during this whole shoot, my camera was set manually on a fixed setting that wasn't appropriate for the lighting that night. Lol, I tried to use Marie's second SLR that she made me play with, but I just couldn't get the right fill =/ Hopefully this won't be the same story when I finally get my own.
Movie Trailer feel hehe.

All in all it was a fun shoot and another opportunity to add onto our growing portfolios =D.

Till next time, be on the look out for more collaborations!!
Make sure to Visit Marie's Facebook page as well, she has great potential and I can't wait to see her grow creatively XD

Love,
Nix

A Late Post Bout My Shoot With Madi

Sorry. I'm really bummed out bout how late I write about my current projects =p, I have this whole planned out strategy on how to write these posts and it kinda gets in the way of doing them on time LOL. I've noticed that I been writing alot bout cars too, both on my Tumblr and on here so Ima go ahead and make sure I write alot more bout other thangs hehehe (>.<)

The shoot with Madi was taken about a week and a half ago. I had the whole idea of her shoot based on how she looked. Out of everyone I know here, she has one the most unique features that are great to get creative with. Also the weekend before her shoot, I came from a beach trip with my family and friends. I saw a couple taking pictures by the water. The girl modeled a lava-lava having it up in the air and letting it flutter in the wind. That's when I automatically thought of Madi's shoot. I had it previously planned out with a whole different theme, but I was looking into the time we had to prepare. So instead of a high fashion shoot, I went with a tropical kind. I gave her images for inspiration and to show her a solid example of what I had in mind, and when she came to the shoot all prepared, she totally nailed the idea I had ^-^

The setting wasn't at my best interest in the beginning. We went to Micro Beach for the sandbar in front of Hyatt, but the tide wasn't as low as we wanted it. It was too late to quit though, and I was falling behind with new updates so I made use of what we had. As long as we had the conditions in our favor we were good.

Madi had this wonderful summer dress in the beginning that I couldn't wait to take pictures of, I wish it was a lil less gloomy that day cause some bright blue skies with them puffie clouds coulda made a difference. Though the shots we got still turned out great. The image above is one of my favorites out of the whole set. We were actually stuck on poses until i asked her to kneel, then we got this awesome effect with the water and her dress, with her own poses she made this image look amazing ^-^

Then we took one with her and her lava-lava. This image was inspired by that moment I saw when I was at Managaha with my family. Thank goodness it was a bit windy or this shot could've been a total fail lol.

One of the images I sent to Madi were images of models with really long dresses by the beach. I couldn't believe she had one just like'em which we used for the goddess set. I re'used a location I used for the make-up set for Marie Sayson, but having the other side of the dead tree in focus. I really didn't mind since I know that this side of the tree I havn't took shots with. also I enjoy using every bit of my resources so it wasn't really a big deal to shoot again in a location I've used twice hehe.

One technique to be totally creative is just looking at one thing and finding ways to capture it in different ways so you have a well made variety of images. I really loved this dead tree cause of all the places on it that I could use for a great photograph. The image above was taken within its branches which created a beautiful frame around Madi's face.

It was seriously fun doing her shoot. I enjoyed all the outtakes and funny lil situations we had like her loosing a nail hehehe. In the end, even though it was really hot and I only got a few shots down due to artist block, I still had some great photos of her XD

I hope yah'll enjoyed the creativeness :)

THANKIES MUCHIES!

NIX

Landscapes, Waterscapes and Skies

The best thing about living on an island are the landscapes, waterscapes and skies you get. Here in Saipan we get some pretty awesome combination of all three factors. I did a lot of landscape photography just as a hobby, and pretty much it still is, but my favorite things to capture were anything concerning with the sky. I love sunsets and cloudy like days where light rays will come through and create a dramatic appearance in the sky. I love the puffy and broken down clouds through double weather days where shapes can be easily formed and named.

I believe that by evening, it's the best time to unwind. Your out of school/work, dinner is freshly just around the corner, a small bar might just be ready to release you from a hard days work and the sheets are just ready to embrace you.

So it's really enjoyable to capture that one time of the day where all is calm. It's the best thing that I can compare to living in the moment. The best parts of life is that one lil glimpse or those few moments of happiness and security. Just like a sunset. Such beauty to disappear into a memory after a few minutes.

^This was taken at my place around late 5pm. I wish I got the chance to capture the whole set but this one cloud gave me that imaginative feel. If you look at the darker part near the power pole, you'll notice a head with it's mouth wide open and lil arms reaching out, then on the lower left hand corner, a yacht. >.< I guess this monster was either tynuh eat it or saying "Stay back!" lol.

^A beautiful sunset captured north of the island. This is what I call a 2 weather day because in this picture there is an absolute clear blue sky and rain all at the same time. We have a lot of them here, but they make incredible pictures. This was all taken by my cellphone too and edited a bit in Photoshop =].

^My first sunset shot in ages. This was months ago when I finally got back into photography. The orange tone is created by a setting in my camera that's created specifically for sunset shots. I'm still pretty amazed with how well my camera takes images ^-^ especially that it's only a point-and-shoot. I love calm water and low tides. They almost blend into the sand foreground and just makes it seem like people are walking above it =].

^My first sunset at a different angle without the special setting on the camera. The position of the sun gives hint of the time of day, this is roughly about 30 minutes before sundown. I love how the clouds just gave it the dramatic look I'm always into and having the cargo ship (to the left) in the frame was a major plus.

^A beautiful sunset before a great down pour. The whole months I've got to capture these images was a pretty rainy season, but like I've mentioned, those huge clouds always creates a beautiful sunset. I love this because of the colors I've captured. Wish I had the chance to do a whole panorama that day, could have been killer.

I'm excited to do more of these hehehe.
Maybe if my weekend ends up being clear of
portrait shoots, I'll be able to just drive around
and shoot some scenery ^-^

Hope you loved the photos!
